Low Oil Indicator

Westinghouse Generator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The Westinghouse Generator Low Oil Indicator — an amber or red warning light on the control panel — activates when the engine oil level drops below the minimum safe threshold. The generator's low oil shutdown system automatically stops the engine to prevent internal damage. Add the correct oil to the full mark on the dipstick before restarting.

Affected Models

  • Westinghouse WGen7500
  • Westinghouse WGen9500
  • Westinghouse iGen4500
  • Westinghouse WGen12000
  • Westinghouse WGen3600

Common Causes

  • Oil level dropped due to normal consumption during a long run
  • Oil was not checked before starting the generator
  • The generator is positioned on an uneven surface, causing the oil sensor to read low incorrectly
  • A small oil leak is causing faster-than-normal consumption

How to Fix It

  1. Switch off the generator and let it cool for 5 minutes

Do not check oil immediately after shutdown — hot oil gives an inflated dipstick reading. Allow 5 minutes for the oil to settle into the sump before pulling the dipstick.

  2. Check the oil level on a flat, level surface

Place the generator on level ground. Remove the oil dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth, reinsert fully, then pull it out to read the level. The oil should sit between the MIN and MAX marks.

  3. Add oil slowly until the level reaches the FULL mark

Westinghouse recommends SAE 10W-30 for temperatures above 32°F and SAE 5W-30 for colder conditions. Add oil in small increments — a quarter quart at a time — rechecking the dipstick each time. Do not overfill past the MAX mark.

  4. Restart the generator and confirm the indicator goes off

With oil at the correct level on flat ground, start the generator normally. The Low Oil Indicator should turn off within seconds of the engine starting. If it remains lit, turn off immediately and check whether the oil level sensor wire is properly connected.

  5. Check for oil leaks if the level dropped unexpectedly fast

Inspect the drain plug, valve cover gasket, and the underside of the engine for oil residue. A loose drain plug can be tightened by hand plus a quarter turn. A leaking gasket requires professional repair or DIY gasket replacement before the next run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Westinghouse generator restart on its own after oil is added?

No. After a low oil shutdown, you must manually restart the generator. The low oil protection latches the shutdown circuit until you restore oil. Once oil is at the correct level, start it using the recoil cord or electric start button as normal.

How often should I change oil on a Westinghouse generator?

Westinghouse recommends an oil change at 20 hours for new generators (break-in period), then every 50–100 hours or at least once per season, whichever comes first. Always check the level before each use regardless of when the last change was.
