How to Fix It
-
Check Audio Balance.
iPhone Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance.
Slide to centre (0).
Many users have nudged this off without realising — it sends audio only to one side. -
Clean the silent earbud's mesh.
Look at the silent earbud — see the small mesh grille at the speaker.
Earwax accumulates here over months.
Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush the mesh.
For stubborn buildup, rolled adhesive tape can lift wax without pushing it deeper. -
Reset and re-pair.
Place both AirPods in case, close lid 30 seconds.
Open lid, hold case button 15 seconds — flashing white LED confirms reset.
Forget AirPods on iPhone (Settings → Bluetooth → i → Forget).
Re-pair by holding open case near iPhone. -
Test with another device.
Pair AirPods with iPad, MacBook, or Android phone.
If silent earbud works on another device, it's an iPhone Bluetooth issue.
If silent on every device, the earbud hardware is failing. -
Place in case briefly.
Pop the silent earbud back in case for 30 seconds.
Take it out.
Often re-establishes Bluetooth connection between the two earbuds (they communicate with each other, not just the phone). -
Contact Apple Support.
If after cleaning + reset + multi-device test the earbud is still silent, hardware failure.
AppleCare covers replacement.
Out of warranty, single-AirPod replacement is about 80 USD via Apple Service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are AirPods supposed to work as singles?
Yes — you can use just one AirPod if the other is in the case or out of battery.
The single-bud mode automatically activates.
Some users prefer this for phone calls or to keep one ear aware of surroundings.
Confirm the silent bud isn't simply marked as out-of-ear via the always-on/in-ear sensor failing.
