ANC Not Working

Sennheiser Headphones

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Sennheiser ANC stopping or not engaging means the active noise cancellation circuit isn't processing the external mic signal.
Causes: app set ANC to 'Off' or 'Adaptive', earcup mics blocked by hair or earpads sitting wrong, ear cushions damaged (creates seal leaks), or firmware bug.
Open Smart Control app, set ANC to 'On' explicitly, reseat the headphones for proper seal, and update firmware.

Affected Models

  • Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless
  • Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless
  • Sennheiser PXC 550-II

Common Causes

  • ANC mode set to Off in Smart Control app
  • Adaptive ANC misreading environment as quiet
  • Ear cushions worn — seal compromise reduces ANC effectiveness
  • Earcup mics covered by long hair or hat
  • Firmware bug after update
  • ANC processor failure (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Open Smart Control app.

    Connect headphones via Bluetooth.
    Open Sennheiser Smart Control.
    Sound Personalization → Noise Cancelling.
Confirm setting is 'On' (not Off, not Adaptive).

  2. Test in a noisy environment.

ANC effect is most obvious in continuous noise: AC, fan, traffic, airplane.
If you're in a quiet room, you might think ANC is broken when it's working fine — Sennheiser only cancels 20-30 dB of low-frequency noise.
Walk near a fan or AC and toggle ANC on/off to verify.

  3. Check ear cushion condition.

Cushions wrinkle, crack, or thin out after a year or two of daily use.
A poor seal lets external noise leak in regardless of ANC.
Genuine Sennheiser replacement cushions are 30-60 USD.
Pop the old ones off, snap new ones on.

  4. Move hair clear of mics.

Sennheiser earcups have small mic openings on the outside.
Long hair, hats, scarves can block them.
ANC needs to 'hear' the noise to cancel it.
Pull hair away from the cups.

  5. Update firmware.

Smart Control app → Settings → Firmware Update.
    Apply latest stable.
Sennheiser regularly improves ANC algorithms in firmware.

  6. Factory reset.

Hold Power button for 10-15 seconds (Momentum 4 reset varies).
    Light pattern confirms reset.
    Re-pair, re-enable ANC.
    Resets stuck ANC state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't ANC cancel voices?

ANC works by playing the inverse of incoming sound waves.
It's most effective on steady, low-frequency noise (engines, AC).
Voices are unpredictable mid-frequency content — ANC reduces them slightly but won't cancel them like fan noise.
This is physics, not a fault.
