Not Charging

Sennheiser Headphones

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Sennheiser Momentum not charging usually points to a USB-C cable issue, a dead battery from extended storage, or a charging port with debris.
Try a different USB-C cable and a known-good 5V power source (computer USB or a phone charger you trust).
Clean the headphone's USB-C port with a dry cotton swab.
If still nothing, contact Sennheiser warranty — Momentum batteries fail occasionally and are covered.

Affected Models

  • Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless
  • Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless
  • Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3
  • Sennheiser HD 660S2 (with USB-C)

Common Causes

  • Charging cable damaged (very common with daily use)
  • USB-C port clogged with lint, dust, or pocket debris
  • Dead battery from being stored discharged for months
  • Wrong charger (some Quick Charge chargers don't negotiate properly)
  • Power source providing too little current (1A USB ports)
  • Battery cell failure (warranty issue)

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different USB-C cable.

USB-C cables fail more often than people realize, especially after a year of daily use.
Test with a brand new cable from a phone or laptop.
If headphones charge with new cable, the old cable was bad.

  2. Clean the USB-C port.

Pocket lint accumulates in USB-C ports.
Use a dry wooden toothpick or cotton swab to gently sweep out the port.
    Don't use anything metallic.
You'll often pull out a surprising amount of fuzz.

  3. Use a basic USB-A or 5V charger.

Some fast chargers (USB-PD, Quick Charge 4+) negotiate higher voltages that don't always work for headphones.
    Try a computer's USB-A port via USB-A-to-C cable, or a basic 5V phone charger.
Watch the charging LED — should turn on within 5-10 seconds.

  4. Try long charging.

If the battery was completely dead for weeks, the cell may need extended charging to come back.
Leave plugged in for 8-12 hours uninterrupted.
Some Momentums recover from deep discharge after this.

  5. Reset the headphones.

Sennheiser Momentum reset varies by model — typically hold Power + Volume Down for 10 seconds.
    Check the manual.
Reset clears charging state machine that may be stuck.

  6. Check warranty.

Momentum 4 carries a 2-year warranty in most regions.
Contact Sennheiser support with proof of purchase.
    Battery cell failures are covered.
Out-of-warranty repair from authorized centers is 80-150 USD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace the battery myself?

Sennheiser Momentum batteries are not user-replaceable.
The headphones are glued/clipped together and require careful disassembly.
iFixit has guides for some models but voids warranty.
For a 2-3 year-old unit, battery replacement is usually 80-100 USD via Sennheiser service — cheaper than new headphones.
