Update Failed
Oticon Hearing Aid
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Update Failed in the Oticon Companion app means the firmware package could not be fully installed on your hearing aids. The hearing aids retain their previous firmware and continue working normally. The update can be safely retried after addressing the cause.
Affected Models
- Oticon Real
- Oticon More
- Oticon Intent
- Oticon Own
- Oticon Zircon
Common Causes
- Bluetooth connection dropped during the firmware transfer
- Hearing aid battery too low to complete the update safely
- Phone screen turned off or Companion app moved to background during the update
- Outdated version of the Oticon Companion app
- Phone was too far from the hearing aids during transfer
How to Fix It
-
Charge the aids to above 50% before retrying
The firmware update process requires stable power from start to finish. For rechargeable Oticon aids, place them in the SmartCharger for at least 1 hour before retrying. The Oticon Companion app home screen shows the battery percentage for each aid.
-
Prevent the phone screen from locking
Before starting the update, temporarily set Auto-Lock (iOS) or Screen Timeout (Android) to Never. Return to normal after the update completes. If the screen locks during the transfer, the Bluetooth link may drop and interrupt the firmware installation.
-
Place the phone next to the hearing aids
The firmware is delivered over Bluetooth at very close range. Place your phone face-up on a flat surface right next to the SmartCharger containing the aids, or keep it within arm's length if wearing the aids. Do not walk away during the update.
-
Update the Oticon Companion app to the latest version
Open the App Store or Google Play and check for an Oticon Companion update. An outdated app version may fail to deliver the correct firmware package. After updating the app, restart it and attempt the hearing aid firmware update again.
-
Restart the aids and retry
For rechargeable aids, open the SmartCharger lid for 5 seconds and then close it to restart the aids. For battery models, open and close the battery door. Reopen the Companion app and check if the update prompt reappears to retry the installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to update Oticon hearing aid firmware regularly?
Oticon releases firmware updates periodically to improve sound processing, Bluetooth stability, and fix minor bugs. While updates are not mandatory, they are recommended. Your audiologist also applies firmware updates during your regular service visits using Oticon Genie fitting software.
Can I update Oticon firmware without the Companion app?
Yes. Your audiologist can apply firmware updates directly using the Oticon Genie 2 fitting software during a service appointment. This is a reliable alternative if the Companion app update consistently fails, and your audiologist can check whether the aid needs any other attention at the same time.
