Red LED
Phonak Hearing Aid
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A red LED on the Phonak Charger Case Go signals a charging fault. The charger cannot properly charge one or both hearing aids. The fault is most commonly caused by dirty contacts, an aid not fully seated, or a problem with the USB power source.
Affected Models
- Phonak Audeo Lumity R
- Phonak Audeo Paradise R
- Phonak Audeo Marvel R
- Phonak Audeo Sphere R
- Phonak Naida P-R
Common Causes
- Hearing aid contacts dirty with wax, moisture, or skin oils
- Hearing aid not seated correctly in the charger cradle
- USB power adapter not providing adequate voltage
- USB cable damaged or loose at the charger port
- Internal rechargeable battery in the hearing aid has degraded
How to Fix It
-
Remove and reseat the hearing aids
Lift both aids out of the charger and carefully reinsert them. The metal strip on the bottom of each aid must contact the corresponding gold pins in the cradle. The correct position is with the aid lying flat in the shaped pocket. The LED should switch to orange within a few seconds if seating is correct.
-
Clean the charging contacts on the aids and charger
Gently wipe the gold charging contacts on the hearing aids using the cleaning brush or a soft dry cloth. Clean the pins inside the charger cradle as well. Do not use water or cleaning sprays on the contacts.
-
Try a different USB power adapter
Disconnect the Phonak charger from its current USB power source and plug it into a different 5V wall adapter. Laptop USB ports and some multi-port power strips can deliver inconsistent voltage that triggers the fault indicator.
-
Inspect the USB cable
Check the USB cable for kinks, fraying, or bent pins at either end. Try replacing the cable with a known-working USB-A or USB-C cable (depending on your charger model) to rule out cable failure.
-
Contact your audiologist if red LED persists
If the red LED remains after reseating, cleaning, and changing the power source, the hearing aid's internal rechargeable battery may be at end of life. Phonak audiologists can test the cell and replace it — the hearing aid itself does not need replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the red LED mean my Phonak charger is broken?
Not necessarily. The red LED is a fault indicator triggered by any charging problem — including dirty contacts or a poorly seated aid. Try the cleaning and reseating steps before concluding the charger is faulty. If the charger shows red even with no aids inserted, the charger itself may have failed.
How long do Phonak rechargeable hearing aid batteries last before needing replacement?
Phonak rechargeable hearing aid cells are rated for approximately 4–5 years of normal use (one full charge cycle per day). After that, they retain less capacity and may not last the full day. Your audiologist can replace the cell in clinic — typically a same-day service.
