Update Failed

Phonak Hearing Aid

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Update Failed in the myPhonak app means the firmware package could not be fully written to one or both hearing aids. This is almost always caused by a Bluetooth interruption, low hearing aid battery, or the phone screen locking during the transfer. The aids are safe to use and the update can be retried.

Affected Models

  • Phonak Audeo Lumity R
  • Phonak Audeo Paradise R
  • Phonak Audeo Marvel
  • Phonak Bolero M-R
  • Phonak Naida P-R

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth connection interrupted during firmware transfer
  • Hearing aid battery below the minimum level required to safely complete the update
  • Phone screen locked or myPhonak moved to background mid-update
  • myPhonak app version outdated and incompatible with the firmware package
  • Interference from other Bluetooth devices nearby during the transfer

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the hearing aids to at least 50% before retrying

A firmware update writes new code to the aid's internal memory and requires stable power throughout. Place the aids in the Phonak Charger Case Go for at least 1 hour before attempting the update again. The myPhonak app displays the battery level of each aid on the home screen.

  2. Keep the phone screen on and the app in the foreground

Before starting the update, go to Settings > Display and temporarily increase Auto-Lock to Never (iOS) or Screen Timeout to a high value (Android). The update can take 10–20 minutes per aid; if the screen locks, the Bluetooth link may drop and fail the update.

  3. Place the phone within 30 cm of the hearing aids

The firmware is transferred over Bluetooth at close range. Set the phone on a flat surface right next to the charger holding the aids, or wear the aids and set the phone in your lap. Do not walk around or leave the room during the update.

  4. Update the myPhonak app first

An outdated myPhonak app can fail to deliver the correct firmware package. Check the App Store or Google Play for a myPhonak update, install it, and then retry the hearing aid firmware update.

  5. Disable other nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily

Smartwatches, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth devices nearby can interfere with the hearing aid update transfer. Turn off Bluetooth on any other wearables during the update, then re-enable them once it is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a failed firmware update brick my Phonak hearing aids?

No. Phonak's update process keeps the original firmware intact until the new firmware is fully verified. If the update fails, the aids automatically revert to the previous working firmware. Your hearing aids will continue to function normally.

How do I know if the Phonak firmware update was successful?

After a successful update, the myPhonak app shows a confirmation screen with the new firmware version number. You can also verify the version in myPhonak under Device Details for each aid. If the version number has not changed, the update did not complete.
