Cool / Cold
Balboa Hot Tub
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Balboa controls show 'COOL' when water drops more than 20°F below set point, and 'COLD' when freeze protection kicks in.
It's a status message, not a hard fault — but it means heating isn't keeping up.
Check that the heater is enabled (not on Sleep mode), the cover seals well, and there's no flow problem stopping the heater from running.
Affected Models
- Balboa BP501
- Balboa BP601
- Balboa GS501Z
- Balboa GS510DZ
- Balboa VS501Z
Common Causes
- Spa is in Sleep or Economy mode (heater locked out)
- Cover lifted off or damaged — heat escaping
- Heater element failed (water won't warm at all)
- Outside temperatures below freezing for extended period
- Recent fresh-water refill — heater catching up
How to Fix It
-
Check the operating mode.
Press the Mode or Heat button.
Confirm the spa is in Standard or Ready mode — not Sleep or Economy.
Sleep limits heating to scheduled times; the water cools heavily between them. -
Inspect the cover.
Walk around the spa and check the cover sits flush.
Saturated foam, rips, or compressed insulation lets heat out fast.
A failed cover can drop water temp 10-20°F overnight in winter.
Replacement covers are 200-500 USD. -
Confirm the heater runs.
With the spa on and heating active, listen near the heater.
You should hear pump 1 circulating; you may see a slight glow on heater LEDs (some boards).
Touch the heater housing carefully — should feel warm to the touch within 10 minutes. -
Check the temperature setting.
Press the temp up arrow.
Confirm set point is at desired temperature — usually 100-104°F for hot tubs.
Some controls let you set to high temperature only when water clears 80°F. -
If water won't warm, suspect the heater element.
If hours pass with no temperature rise and no flow errors, the heating element has failed.
Replacement elements are 100-200 USD.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I worry about the COLD message in winter?
COLD usually means freeze protection is actively running — pumps cycle to prevent frozen pipes.
If COLD appears in mild weather, something else is wrong.
Check power, heater function, and cover.
