SnB
Balboa Hot Tub
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
SnB means the regulating temperature sensor — sensor B — has failed or is reading out of range.
This sensor is the one that tells the controller current water temperature, used for heater control.
The control pack disables heating because it can't manage temperature without an accurate reading.
Sensor replacement (50–100 USD part) is the typical fix.
Affected Models
- Balboa BP series control packs
- Balboa GS series
- Balboa GL series
- Balboa M7 spa packs
Common Causes
- Regulating sensor failed (open or shorted)
- Sensor coated with calcium deposits (false low reading)
- Sensor wire disconnected at the controller
- Connector loose at the controller
- Controller sensor input damaged
How to Fix It
-
Power off at the breaker.
Switch the spa breaker off.
Wait 60 seconds before working on sensors.
Power-off is essential — sensors connect to the live controller side. -
Find the regulating sensor.
The regulating sensor is on the heater housing or in the heater plumbing — looks similar to the high limit sensor but with different wire colors typically.
Two wires run to the controller.
Check Balboa documentation for your specific model. -
Inspect for calcium buildup.
If the sensor probe is exposed to water, calcium can build up over years and insulate it from accurate temperature reading.
Pull the sensor (with system depressurized) and look at the probe.
Heavy white scale indicates buildup.
Soak in vinegar for an hour to dissolve, then rinse. -
Check connectors and wiring.
Trace the sensor wires back to the controller.
Look for any chafe damage, corrosion at the connector, or loose pins.
Reseat the connector.
Sometimes just reseating clears SnB if the issue was a marginal connection. -
Replace the sensor.
Balboa regulating sensors are 50–100 USD parts.
Match the part number for your specific control pack.
Replacement requires draining the system partially (around the heater).
Spa techs do this routinely; DIY is possible but takes care to avoid leaks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the spa cool down on its own with SnB?
Yes — without working sensor, the controller can't command heat.
Heat dissipates over time and the water cools to ambient temperature.
For winter spa use, fix SnB before water freezes (which damages plumbing).
For summer, you have more time but still don't delay.
Why does the sensor get scale buildup?
Hard water (high calcium) leaves white deposits on metal surfaces over time.
The sensor probe is metal in direct water contact, so it's affected.
Annual maintenance flush with a calcium descaler product reduces buildup and extends sensor life noticeably.
