GFCI Trips on Startup

Sundance Hot Tub

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Sundance GFCI tripping means current is leaking to ground somewhere — usually a heater element with internal moisture, a pump motor with bad windings, or wet wiring.
This is a safety system — don't bypass it.
Disconnect components one at a time to isolate which is leaking.
Hot tub electrical work near water is professional territory if you're not comfortable with 240V.

Affected Models

  • Sundance Cameo
  • Sundance Optima
  • Sundance Maxxus
  • Sundance Aspen
  • Sundance Capri

Common Causes

  • Heater element with internal water leak (cracked sheath)
  • Pump motor windings shorting to housing
  • Wet electrical connections after heavy rain or flooding
  • Damaged wire insulation rubbed against metal
  • GFCI breaker itself failing (less common)
  • Weeping water from pipe joint into electrical area

How to Fix It

  1. Power off, isolate breaker.

Switch off the spa's GFCI breaker fully.
Hot tubs run 240V — verify with voltage tester.
Open equipment compartment after power confirmed off.

  2. Look for visible water.

Inside equipment area, look for water on the bottom, dripping from pipes, condensation on connectors.
    Wet electrical = ground fault.
Wipe dry with rags, address the leak source if visible.

  3. Disconnect heater wires.

Disconnect both heater terminals from the circuit.
    Reset GFCI, switch on.
If GFCI holds, heater is the leaking component.
Heater replacement is 100-200 USD plus labor.

  4. If heater is innocent, disconnect pump.

    Reconnect heater.
    Disconnect pump wires.
    Reset GFCI, switch on.
If GFCI holds now, pump motor is leaking.
    Pump replacement is 200-500 USD.

  5. Test components with megger.

Insulation tester (megger) measures leakage from terminals to ground.
Less than 0.5 megohms = leaking.
    Healthy components show infinite resistance.
    This is electrician-level testing.

  6. Don't bypass GFCI.

Some users in frustration replace GFCI with regular breaker.
This is illegal and dangerous — hot tubs near water absolutely require GFCI protection.
Fix the leaking component, don't disable the safety.

  7. Call a tech if you can't isolate.

If you've disconnected everything and GFCI still trips, the spa has wiring damage somewhere.
Tracing requires opening the cabinet and walking every wire.
Spa technician charge: 100-200 USD diagnostic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a tripping GFCI dangerous?

It's PROTECTING from danger.
The GFCI sees current leaking and shuts off before someone gets shocked.
If the GFCI trips, something IS wrong electrically — don't ignore it.
The fix is to find the leak, not bypass the GFCI.
