P1

Carrier Split AC

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

P1 on a Carrier AC means the high-pressure switch on the refrigerant line has tripped — refrigerant pressure exceeded the safe limit. The compressor stops to prevent damage. Most P1 cases are caused by restricted airflow at the outdoor unit or a dirty outdoor coil. Service is needed if airflow is OK.

Affected Models

  • Carrier 24SCA5
  • Carrier 38GVQ
  • Carrier 53QHET
  • Carrier Inverter Split AC
  • Carrier Comfort Series

Common Causes

  • Outdoor coil blocked with dust, leaves, or debris (most common)
  • Outdoor fan failed or running too slowly
  • Insufficient clearance around the outdoor unit
  • Refrigerant overcharge from a previous service
  • Failed high-pressure switch giving false trip

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the AC.

Switch off at the breaker for at least 20 minutes. This allows the high pressure to dissipate and the protection switch to reset.

  2. Clean the outdoor coil.

With power OFF, gently brush leaves and debris from the outdoor coil fins. A garden hose can be used on low pressure to wash the coil. Bent fins can be straightened with a fin comb.

  3. Clear around the outdoor unit.

Confirm at least 30 cm of clear space on all sides of the outdoor unit. Plants, fences, or storage close to the unit restrict airflow and cause P1 even when the coil itself is clean.

  4. Restart and observe.

Restore power and run cooling. If P1 clears and cooling is normal, the cause was airflow. If P1 returns within minutes, the issue is internal — likely overcharge or pressure switch.

  5. Book HVAC service if P1 persists.

A technician can check pressures and the high-pressure switch directly. Common service: USD 150–250 for diagnosis and minor service; pressure switch replacement USD 200–350 fitted.

When to Call a Professional

P1 with confirmed clear airflow requires an HVAC technician with a manifold gauge to read pressures and confirm overcharge or sensor fault. Recharging or releasing refrigerant is regulated work — book Carrier-authorised service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will P1 damage my Carrier AC?

P1 itself is a protection — the compressor shuts down to prevent damage. However repeated P1 events under heavy use can stress the compressor. Don't ignore P1 — fix the underlying airflow or overcharge issue.

How often should I clean my Carrier outdoor coil?

At least once a year, ideally before summer. In high-pollen or dusty areas, every 3–6 months. A 5-minute brush with a soft brush prevents most P1 events and extends compressor life.
