E5

Electra Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E5 on an Electra AC means the outdoor ambient temperature sensor (the thermistor that measures the outside air temperature) has a fault. This sensor helps the inverter adjust compressor speed based on how hot or cold it is outside. When the sensor fails or reads an impossible value, the AC shuts down.

Affected Models

  • Electra Avante Inverter
  • Electra Classic Inverter
  • Electra Alpha Series
  • Electra Split AC (all inverter models)
  • Electra 1 Ton / 1.5 Ton / 2 Ton Inverter

Common Causes

  • Outdoor ambient thermistor has failed — resistance value out of specification
  • Thermistor connector loose or corroded at the outdoor PCB
  • Thermistor wiring damaged by weathering or rodents
  • Thermistor probe dislodged from its mounting clip
  • Outdoor PCB fault causing incorrect interpretation of the sensor signal

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC at the remote and switch off the circuit breaker.

Wait 5 minutes, restore power, and attempt one restart. A transient E5 caused by a brief voltage event may clear after a power cycle.

  2. If E5 returns, note whether it appears immediately on startup or after running for a while.

Immediate E5 on startup suggests the sensor has completely failed (open circuit). E5 that appears after 10–20 minutes suggests the sensor drifts out of spec as it warms up.

  3. If E5 persists, call an authorised Electra technician.

The outdoor ambient thermistor is an inexpensive part — most of the repair cost will be the technician's visit fee.

When to Call a Professional

E5 requires a licensed AC technician. The thermistor is located inside the outdoor unit. A technician will measure the sensor resistance and replace it if it falls outside the Electra specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E5 dangerous to ignore on an Electra AC?

E5 locks out the compressor, so the AC will not cool the room — this is the AC protecting itself. Do not repeatedly restart the unit hoping E5 will go away; arrange a technician visit.

Can extreme outdoor temperatures trigger a false E5?

In rare cases, a thermistor that is borderline can produce an out-of-range reading when outdoor temperatures are very high or very low. If E5 only appears during extreme weather and clears when temperatures normalise, mention this to the technician — the sensor may be borderline rather than fully failed.
