E3

Mitsubishi Electric Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E3 on a Mitsubishi Electric AC means the indoor fan motor is not operating correctly — the motor is either locked (not spinning when it should be), drawing too much current, or the control board cannot detect it. Without the indoor fan, no cool air reaches the room and the evaporator coil would freeze, so the AC shuts down.

Affected Models

  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-AP Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-EF Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-GL Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric MSY Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric Inverter Split AC (all models)

Common Causes

  • Indoor fan motor bearing worn or seized — motor cannot turn freely
  • Foreign object (insect, debris) lodged in the fan wheel jamming rotation
  • Fan motor capacitor failed — motor does not have enough starting torque
  • Fan motor winding burnt out — motor draws excessive current
  • Loose wiring connection at the fan motor terminals or the indoor PCB
  • PCB fault preventing the correct voltage signal from reaching the motor

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC and switch off the circuit breaker.

Do not attempt to manually spin or access the fan — the indoor unit contains live electrical connections.

  2. After powering down, look into the indoor unit through the front grille.

With a torch, check whether there is any obvious debris, insect nest, or foreign object visible near the fan wheel. If you can see something large and accessible (a leaf, a piece of plastic), you can remove it with tweezers or long-nose pliers with the power OFF.

  3. Restore power and restart once.

If the obstruction has been removed or the fault was temporary, E3 may clear. Listen for the fan starting — you should hear it spinning within a few seconds of the AC turning on.

  4. If E3 persists, do not keep restarting — call a technician.

Running the compressor without the indoor fan causes the evaporator to ice over rapidly, which can damage the coil.

When to Call a Professional

E3 requires a licensed technician. The indoor unit must be partially disassembled to access the fan motor. A technician will check for obstructions, test the motor electrically, and replace it if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the indoor fan is spinning?

With the AC on and set to fan-only mode (no cooling), you should feel air blowing out of the indoor unit within 10–15 seconds. If you can hear the unit is on but feel no airflow, the fan is likely not spinning.

Is the indoor fan motor expensive to replace on a Mitsubishi Electric?

Indoor fan motors typically cost $40–120 for the part, plus technician labour. For older units (7+ years), it is worth asking the technician whether the repair cost is worth it compared to the age of the unit.
