E4
Tadiran Split AC
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
E4 on a Tadiran AC means the refrigerant pressure in the system has exceeded the safe maximum and the high-pressure protection has shut the compressor down. This is the AC protecting itself from compressor damage. The most common causes are a blocked outdoor coil, a failed outdoor fan, or a refrigerant overcharge.
Affected Models
- Tadiran Inverter Split AC
- Tadiran Breeze Series
- Tadiran T-MAX Series
- Tadiran Coral Series
- Tadiran Split AC (all inverter models)
Common Causes
- Outdoor condenser coil clogged with dust, dirt, or cottonwood seeds
- Outdoor fan motor or capacitor failed — hot air cannot be exhausted from the condenser
- Objects or vegetation blocking airflow to the outdoor unit
- Refrigerant overcharged — too much refrigerant pushes pressure above the safety limit
- Expansion valve restricted or stuck closed
- Very high outdoor ambient temperature exceeding the unit's design operating range
How to Fix It
-
Switch off the AC and go to the outdoor unit immediately.
Check all sides and the top of the outdoor unit for blockages. Minimum clearance of 50 cm on all sides is needed for proper airflow.
-
Inspect the condenser coil and clean if necessary.
With power off, gently rinse the condenser fins with a garden hose at low pressure. Aim from inside the unit outward to push debris through the fins rather than further in.
-
Check the outdoor fan is spinning when you restart.
Watch through the top grille — the fan should be spinning within 30–60 seconds of the AC starting. A non-spinning fan will cause E4 every time — switch off and call a technician.
-
Wait 30 minutes before restarting after an E4 trip.
Refrigerant pressure takes time to drop to normal after a high-pressure event. Restarting too quickly causes E4 to trip again immediately.
When to Call a Professional
If clearing the outdoor unit does not resolve E4, call a Tadiran authorised technician. Refrigerant pressure and charge issues require certified HVAC professionals with pressure gauges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean the outdoor coil during an E4 fault?
Yes — but switch off the power to the outdoor unit at the isolator switch or circuit breaker first. Never clean the coil with power on. A garden hose on low pressure (not a pressure washer) is safe for rinsing the aluminium fins.
Does E4 mean my Tadiran AC needs a refrigerant top-up?
Not necessarily — E4 is high pressure, and refrigerant overcharge (too much refrigerant) is one cause, but a blocked condenser or failed fan is more commonly to blame. A refrigerant top-up would actually make a high-pressure condition worse if the charge is already high. Always diagnose the root cause before adding refrigerant.
