Water Leaking
Tadiran Split Air Conditioner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Water dripping from the indoor unit of a Tadiran air conditioner is almost always caused by a blocked condensate drain pipe. The water that normally drains away outside is overflowing inside instead. This is fixable without replacing any parts.
Affected Models
- Tadiran Inverter Series
- Tadiran Alpha
- Tadiran Superior
- Tadiran Elite
Common Causes
- Condensate drain pipe is blocked with algae, mold, or debris
- Drain pan is cracked or overflowing
- Indoor unit is not level — water pooling instead of draining
- Air filter is severely clogged, causing the coil to freeze and then melt in large volumes
- Drain pipe is not sloped correctly toward the outlet
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the air conditioner
Stop operation immediately to prevent water damage to walls, floors, and electrical components below the indoor unit.
-
Place towels or a container under the unit
Catch any remaining water that drips while you work on the drain.
-
Clean the air filter
Remove and wash the filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to freeze. When the coil thaws, it produces excess water that overwhelms the drain.
-
Locate and clear the condensate drain pipe
The drain pipe exits the indoor unit and runs outside (usually beside the refrigerant pipes). Use a wet/dry vacuum or a thin flexible brush to clear the pipe. Alternatively, pour a cup of diluted white vinegar into the drain pan to dissolve algae buildup.
-
Check unit levelness
Use a spirit level on the bottom of the indoor unit. It should be level or very slightly tilted backward (toward the drain). If it tilts forward, water pools and spills.
-
Test and monitor
Run the unit for 30 minutes and check that water is flowing out of the outdoor drain pipe end. If dripping inside stops, the blockage has been cleared.
When to Call a Professional
Only if clearing the drain yourself does not stop the leak, or if the drain pipe is inaccessible.
Why Tadiran Air Conditioners Leak Water
During cooling, your air conditioner removes humidity from the air. This moisture collects on the cold evaporator coil and drips into a drain pan, then flows out through a pipe to outside.
When the pipe blocks — which happens naturally as algae and slime build up in the warm, wet pipe over years — water has nowhere to go and overflows from the drain pan into your room.
The Good News
A blocked drain is the most common and easiest AC repair. In most cases a homeowner can clear it with a vacuum or vinegar flush without calling anyone.
Prevention
Add a condensate drain cleaning tablet (available at hardware stores) to the drain pan once a month during the cooling season. These slow-dissolving tablets release algae-inhibiting agents and prevent the buildup that causes blockages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean the Tadiran air conditioner filter?
Every 2–4 weeks during heavy use (summer/winter). A clean filter prevents the most common causes of water leaks — frozen coils from restricted airflow.
The drain is clear but water still leaks. What else could it be?
Check whether the drain pan inside the unit is cracked (requires opening the unit — technician job), or whether the condensate pump (if your unit has one) has failed. Also verify the unit is level.
