No Bootable Device

Acer Laptop

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

No Bootable Device on an Acer laptop means the BIOS cannot find a drive with a valid operating system. Most cases are caused by a wrong boot mode, a corrupted boot record, or a failed drive.

Affected Models

  • Acer Aspire
  • Acer Swift
  • Acer Predator
  • Acer Nitro
  • Acer Spin
  • Acer TravelMate

Common Causes

  • Hard drive or SSD failure or disconnection
  • BIOS Boot Mode mismatch (UEFI vs Legacy)
  • Corrupted Master Boot Record or EFI partition
  • Wrong boot order in BIOS
  • Loose M.2 SSD or SATA cable connection

How to Fix It

  1. Check if the drive is detected in BIOS.

Power on and tap F2 to enter Acer BIOS. Look for the drive in the boot section. If absent, the drive has failed or is disconnected.

  2. Verify Boot Mode and reset to defaults.

Boot Mode should be UEFI for modern Windows. Press F9 in BIOS to load defaults if you are unsure of settings. Save and exit.

  3. Repair the Windows boot record.

Boot from a Windows 10/11 installation USB. Go to Repair > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt and run: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd

  4. Reseat the SSD.

Power off and remove the bottom panel (typically multiple screws). Unscrew the M.2 SSD, reseat firmly, and screw back down. Or reseat the SATA cable for older 2.5-inch drives.

  5. Replace the drive if undetected.

If the drive is missing in BIOS even after reseating, it has failed. Replace with a compatible drive and reinstall Windows.

When to Call a Professional

If the drive is detected in BIOS but Windows still does not boot after rebuilding the boot record, a technician can perform a clean OS installation while preserving data.
