HP Laptop Error 301 — Hard Drive SMART Failure

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 301 means the hard drive's SMART system is predicting failure. Back up your data immediately and replace the drive — pressing F2 will let you continue temporarily, but the drive is dying.

How to Fix It

Back up your data immediately.

Press F2 to continue past the error and boot Windows. Copy your important files to an external drive or cloud storage right now — every boot is borrowed time on a SMART-failing drive.
Run HP extended diagnostics.

Power on and tap F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Run the extended hard drive test. The detailed result will list specific SMART attributes that are failing.
Check SMART data with CrystalDiskInfo.

Install CrystalDiskInfo (free tool) and check the drive's SMART status from Windows. This shows exactly which attributes have crossed warning thresholds and how serious the issue is.
Replace the drive with an SSD.

Most HP laptops have user-replaceable storage. Upgrade to an SSD for both reliability and performance. Reinstall Windows fresh on the new drive — do not clone from a failing drive.
