System Halted

HP Laptop

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

System Halted at POST means the laptop cannot complete its power-on self-test due to a hardware error. The displayed message names the failed component — RAM, CPU, BIOS, or fan are the most common causes.

Affected Models

  • HP Pavilion
  • HP EliteBook
  • HP ProBook
  • HP Envy
  • HP ZBook
  • HP Spectre

Common Causes

  • Failed RAM module producing memory test errors
  • BIOS corruption from a failed update
  • CPU fan stopped, triggering thermal protection
  • Failed CPU or motherboard component

How to Fix It

  1. Read the on-screen message carefully.

The System Halted message is followed by a description of the failed test (e.g. RAM Test Failed, BIOS Application Error). The specific message points directly at the failure.

  2. Reseat the RAM.

Power off and remove the bottom panel. Pop the RAM modules out and reinsert firmly. Try one stick at a time if there are two — this isolates a failing module.

  3. Check the CPU fan.

Listen for the fan when you power on. A stopped fan triggers thermal protection and System Halted. Clean dust from the fan and intake vents — replace the fan if it does not spin.

  4. Recover BIOS via HP keyboard shortcut.

Hold Windows + B (or Windows + V on some models) while pressing power. This triggers HP's BIOS recovery process. Have a USB drive with the recovery BIOS file ready (download from HP support for your specific model).

When to Call a Professional

If RAM reseating and BIOS recovery do not resolve System Halted, the motherboard has a hardware failure that requires HP service or board-level repair.
