GPS Cold Start Failed
Cobra Marine VHF Radio
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Cobra VHF GPS cold start can take 5-15 minutes if the radio hasn't been powered on in weeks or has moved hundreds of miles.
If 15 minutes pass with no lock, the antenna may be obstructed (under hardtop, surrounded by metal) or the receiver itself is failing.
Move the radio outdoors with clear sky view; try once more.
Patience first — fault diagnosis only after 15+ minutes outside.
Affected Models
- Cobra MR HH600
- Cobra MR F75-D
- Cobra MR HH500 FLT BT
- Cobra MR HH350
Common Causes
- Genuine cold start (radio off for weeks or moved far)
- Internal GPS antenna obstructed by hardtop/T-top metal
- Cold weather affecting battery (handhelds)
- GPS chipset firmware glitch
- External GPS antenna cable damaged (fixed-mount radios)
How to Fix It
-
Wait the full cold-start window.
First time on after weeks: GPS downloads almanac and ephemeris data from satellites.
This takes 5-15 minutes with clear sky.
Don't keep restarting — it resets the process.
Set the radio outdoors and walk away for 10 minutes. -
Confirm clear sky view.
Bring radio outside, away from hardtops, T-tops, radar arches, and tall buildings.
Open cockpit or bow of boat is ideal.
Indoor or under metal = no GPS lock, period. -
Power-cycle once at 15 minutes.
If 15 minutes outside with no lock, power off for 30 seconds, power back on.
Sometimes the receiver hangs in cold-start state and a fresh boot recovers it.
Don't repeat power-cycling more than once or twice — that resets the data download. -
Check external GPS antenna (fixed radios).
If using external antenna on fixed-mount Cobra: trace cable from antenna head to radio.
Look for kinks, salt corrosion at the connector.
Wiggle connector while watching GPS status — flicker means bad connection.
Reseat firmly. -
Update firmware via Cobra app.
Cobra MarineLink app can update VHF firmware over Bluetooth.
GPS bugs in early firmware versions have been fixed.
Install latest stable build. -
Factory reset as last resort.
Hold the menu button + power button for 10 seconds (varies by model).
Factory defaults restored, including GPS settings.
Re-enter MMSI if Cobra allows multiple programming on your model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my phone GPS work indoors but the radio doesn't?
Phones use Assisted GPS (A-GPS) — they download satellite data over cell network and use cell tower triangulation as a backup.
Marine VHF GPS receivers rely on satellites alone, with no internet help.
That's why phone GPS feels instant and radio GPS takes 5-15 minutes after long off-period.
