Group Call Failed
Cobra Marine VHF Radio
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Group Call Failed' means a DSC group call (calling multiple MMSIs at once) didn't reach all expected members.
Either the group MMSI wasn't programmed correctly, the receiving radios were off, or signal didn't reach.
Verify your group's MMSI list, confirm members' radios are on, and re-test.
Some failures are simply because not all members are within VHF range (~20 miles).
Affected Models
- Cobra F77
- Cobra MR HH600
- Cobra MR HH475 LI
- Cobra MR HH600BT
Common Causes
- Group MMSI not programmed correctly
- Receiving radios powered off
- Out of VHF signal range
- DSC channel busy at time of call
- Group MMSI format wrong (must start with 0)
How to Fix It
-
Verify group MMSI format.
Group MMSIs must start with 0 (single digit), then 8 more digits.
Example: 023456789.
If your group MMSI doesn't start with 0, it's not a valid group MMSI — it's an individual MMSI.
Check your radio's group programming. -
Confirm group members are programmed.
Each radio in the group must have the group MMSI programmed.
Check each member's radio settings.
If a radio doesn't have the group MMSI, it won't receive group calls.
This is the most common Group Call Failed cause. -
Verify receiving radios are on.
Group calls need receivers powered on and listening.
If a member's radio is off, it can't receive.
Confirm everyone's radio is on before the test.
Coordinate via voice channel 16 first. -
Check signal range.
VHF range is typically 20-30 miles, less in heavy weather.
If your group is spread out (one boat 50+ miles away), they won't receive.
Group calls work best when boats are within 10-20 miles of each other.
Reconvene closer for testing. -
Try at off-peak times.
If channel 70 (DSC) is busy at the time of your call, the group call may not get through.
Mid-day in busy harbors can have heavy DSC traffic.
Try at quieter times — early morning or late afternoon — for cleaner DSC reception.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are group calls common in recreational boating?
Less common — most recreational boaters use voice on channel 16 or working channels for group communication.
Group DSC is more useful for fishing tournaments (signal location to all members), club rallies, or family flotillas.
Voice is usually simpler for casual group communication.
How do I set up a group MMSI?
BoatUS doesn't issue group MMSIs for free — you'd need to coordinate via FCC for commercial group registration, or self-assign a group identifier among your own boats (less formal).
For tournaments/clubs, the organizer typically arranges group MMSI through FCC.
Recreational use rarely needs formal group MMSIs.
