Low Battery Warning
Standard Horizon Marine VHF Radio
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Standard Horizon shows low battery when supply voltage drops below safe operating level — typically 11.0V or lower.
Causes: weak boat battery, corroded ground, undersized power wiring, or voltage drop from many accessories on one circuit.
Test battery voltage at the radio with engine off then engine running at 1500 RPM.
Below 12.0V at rest or dropping during transmit means address the power supply, not the radio.
Affected Models
- Standard Horizon GX1700
- Standard Horizon GX1850
- Standard Horizon GX2200
- Standard Horizon HX870
Common Causes
- Boat battery weak or near end of life
- Power wires too thin for the run length (voltage drop)
- Ground connection corroded or loose
- Inline fuse partially blown or corroded
- Multiple accessories sharing the same circuit
- Handheld VHF battery pack worn out
How to Fix It
-
Measure voltage at radio terminals.
Open the radio's mounting bracket or back of radio.
Use multimeter on red and black wires.
Engine off: should read 12.6-12.8V.
Below 12.0V indicates either weak battery or voltage drop in wiring. -
Test under transmit load.
Hold the PTT (push-to-talk) for 5 seconds while watching multimeter.
Voltage should not drop below 11.5V.
Drop to 10.5V or lower means undersized wiring or weak battery — radio can't transmit at full power and protection kicks in. -
Inspect inline fuse and connectors.
Standard Horizon radios have a 5A or 10A inline fuse on the red wire.
Pull and inspect — corroded fuses cause voltage drop even if intact.
Replace if any green corrosion visible.
Also check both wire crimps for corrosion. -
Upgrade wire size if voltage drop.
Standard Horizon radios pull 5-6A on transmit.
If wire run from battery to radio is over 10 feet, use 12 AWG marine-grade tinned copper minimum.
Old 16 AWG wires drop too much voltage.
Cost: 30-50 USD for proper marine wire. -
For handhelds: replace the battery pack.
If this is a handheld VHF (HX series), the warning means the internal battery pack is worn.
Standard Horizon sells replacement packs for 40-80 USD.
NiMH packs degrade after 2-3 years; lithium packs last 5-7 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the radio still receive when low battery is shown?
Yes — receiving uses much less power than transmitting.
You'll hear traffic but transmissions will be weak or fail entirely.
In an emergency, low-battery transmit is better than nothing — but fix the power before relying on the radio.
