Speaker Mic Not Working

Standard Horizon Marine VHF Radio

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Standard Horizon speaker mic faults usually trace to: damaged cable (squeezed in hatch, kinked), water in the connector at the radio (saltwater corrosion), or a failed PTT switch.
Inspect cable along its full length, dry and clean the connector at the radio with electrical contact cleaner, and test PTT response.
Replacement RAM3/RAM4/SSM-71H mics are 80-150 USD.

Affected Models

  • Standard Horizon GX1700
  • Standard Horizon GX1850
  • Standard Horizon GX2200
  • Standard Horizon HX870 with RAM

Common Causes

  • Cable damaged (crushed, cut, or kinked)
  • Connector at radio corroded with salt
  • PTT (push-to-talk) switch worn out from heavy use
  • Internal speaker/mic element failed
  • Mic plugged into wrong port (some models have multiple)
  • Coiled cable strand broken inside insulation

How to Fix It

  1. Inspect cable length.

Trace from the radio to the mic.
Look for crush damage, kinks, or cuts.
Coiled cables (RAM3/RAM4) often break internally where strands flex repeatedly.
Replacement is the only fix for cable damage.

  2. Clean the radio's connector.

    Unplug mic from the radio.
Use compressed air to blow out salt and debris.
Apply electrical contact cleaner to a Q-tip and clean inside the connector.
    Let dry, reconnect firmly.

  3. Test the PTT button.

Press PTT slowly while listening to the radio's audio output.
You should hear a slight transmit click on PTT press.
No click = PTT switch failed.
Standard Horizon's RAM3/RAM4 PTT switches are not user-replaceable; full mic replacement is needed.

  4. Test on the radio's main mic.

Switch to the radio's built-in mic (front panel speaker mic).
If it works, the speaker mic itself or its cable is the fault — confirms diagnosis.
If neither works, the radio's audio output stage may be the issue (less common).

  5. For HX870 RAM: check pairing.

If the speaker mic is wireless (RAM4 wireless), confirm it's paired to the radio.
Pairing is in radio menu — varies by model.
    Re-pair if connection dropped.

  6. Replace the speaker mic.

If the cable is damaged or PTT is dead, full mic replacement is the fix.
    RAM3 (wired): about 100-130 USD.
    RAM4 (wireless): about 130-180 USD.
SSM-71H (handheld speaker mic): 80-100 USD.
Genuine Standard Horizon parts ensure compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different brand's speaker mic?
