E3

Omron Blood Pressure Monitor

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E3 means the monitor detected an irregular heartbeat during the measurement. The reading may still appear alongside E3 on some models. If you get E3 frequently, mention it to your doctor.

Affected Models

  • Omron M3
  • Omron M6
  • Omron M7 Intelli IT
  • Omron HEM-7156
  • Omron 10 Series
  • Omron Platinum

Common Causes

  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) — may be harmless or significant
  • Movement or talking during measurement causing false irregular reading
  • Extra heartbeats (ectopic beats) — very common and usually harmless
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) in some cases

How to Fix It

  1. Sit still and re-measure 2–3 times.

Take measurements 1 minute apart. If E3 appears only occasionally, it is likely due to a one-off irregular beat.

  2. Note how often E3 appears.

Occasional E3 is common and usually nothing to worry about. Frequent E3 on every reading is worth discussing with a doctor.

  3. Do not dismiss persistent E3 readings.

If E3 appears on most or all measurements, your doctor should be informed. It may indicate atrial fibrillation (AFib), which can be serious if untreated.

  4. Avoid moving, coughing, or talking during measurement.

Any movement can cause a false E3. Sit completely still with your arm relaxed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does E3 mean I have heart disease?

Not necessarily. E3 is triggered by any irregularity — including completely harmless extra beats (which most people have occasionally). Only a doctor can tell you if your irregular rhythm is clinically significant.

Can I still trust the blood pressure reading when E3 appears?

On models that show a reading alongside E3, the value may be less accurate than normal. Take several readings and average the ones without E3.
