Battery Dead

WatchPAT (Itamar Medical) Home Sleep Apnea Test Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If your WatchPAT device ran out of battery during the night and switched off before completing the sleep study, the recording will be incomplete. The amount of usable data depends on how long the device was running before it died.

Affected Models

  • WatchPAT ONE (disposable)
  • WatchPAT 300
  • WatchPAT 200

Common Causes

  • WatchPAT ONE battery was partially depleted before the test started (disposable unit)
  • WatchPAT 300/200 was not fully charged before the study night
  • Device was started too early in the evening and ran for many hours before sleep

How to Fix It

  1. Check how much data was recorded

Sync the device (if rechargeable) or return it to the clinic (if disposable). A technician can determine how many hours of valid data were captured.

  2. For WatchPAT 300/200: charge fully before the next study

Plug the device in for a full charge cycle (usually 2–3 hours) before the night of the study. Start the recording only when you are ready for sleep, not hours earlier.

  3. Contact your sleep clinic

Report the battery failure. If insufficient data was collected, they will arrange a repeat test.

  4. For WatchPAT ONE: the clinic will provide a replacement

WatchPAT ONE is a disposable single-use device. If the battery failed, the clinic will issue a replacement unit.

When to Call a Professional

Contact the prescribing clinic — they will decide if the recorded data is sufficient or if a repeat study is needed.

WatchPAT Battery Ran Out During the Night

The WatchPAT is designed to record for a full 8-hour sleep study, but battery life depends on the battery being fully charged at the start.

WatchPAT ONE (Disposable)

The single-use WatchPAT ONE has a pre-installed battery that is activated when you first turn the device on. Only turn it on immediately before going to bed — activating it early in the evening wastes the limited battery.

WatchPAT 300 / 200 (Rechargeable)

Charge the device fully the afternoon before your study. The charging indicator shows when charging is complete. Like all lithium batteries, capacity decreases over years of use — if your device is older, the battery may no longer last a full night.

Next Steps

Contact your prescribing clinic. If 4+ hours of data was recorded before the device died, the study may still be interpretable. If less than 4 hours was captured, a repeat study night will likely be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does WatchPAT battery last?

WatchPAT ONE (disposable) is rated for one full night of recording (7–8 hours). WatchPAT 300 rechargeable battery lasts 8–10 hours on a full charge. Starting the device well before bedtime risks the battery running out before morning.

How much of a sleep study is enough to get a diagnosis?

Generally, at least 4 hours of valid recording is needed for a reliable sleep apnea assessment. Your sleep physician will assess the data quality when you return the device.
