F2
GE Microwave
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
GE F2 means the control thinks a button on the touch panel is being pressed continuously.
That is normally physically impossible, so the control flags F2 and refuses to start any cycle until the panel signals release.
The cause is almost always a stuck key, a moisture-shorted membrane, or a failed touch panel assembly — not the main control board.
Affected Models
- GE Profile over-the-range microwave
- GE Spacemaker series
- GE JVM3160 series
- GE PVM9005 series
- GE PEB9159 series
Common Causes
- A button stuck in the pressed position by grease or food splash
- Moisture under the membrane shorting two traces
- Damaged ribbon cable between touch panel and control board
- Touch panel assembly failed from age or heat
- Brief glitch from a power surge — clears with a power-cycle
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the microwave.
Unplug for 60 seconds, then plug back in.
About a third of F2 reports clear here and never come back.
If F2 returns within minutes, the issue is real and one of the next steps applies. -
Look for a visibly stuck key.
Run a fingertip across each button.
Any key that feels lower than its neighbours or that does not click is the suspect.
Common culprit: Cancel, Start, and Time Cook on heavy-use machines. -
Wipe the panel with a damp microfibre.
Grease creeps under buttons and acts like a permanent finger press.
Wipe the entire control panel firmly with a microfibre dampened with mild dish soap.
Dry thoroughly.
Do not spray cleaner directly at the panel — the seam between glass and plastic lets liquid through. -
Test in the diagnostics menu.
On many GE microwaves, holding 1 and 9 together for 5 seconds enters a service mode that shows which key is currently registered.
Press each key one at a time — any key that lights as 'pressed' without you touching it is the failed contact. -
Replace the touch panel.
Disconnect from power before opening the unit.
Remove the screws holding the door grille at the top, slide the control panel forward, and unplug the ribbon cable.
Replacement panels are 80-180 USD depending on model.
30-minute job for someone comfortable with electronics. -
Replace the main control board only as last resort.
If the touch panel tests fine but F2 still appears, the keypad input section of the main control failed.
Boards are 100-250 USD.
Most repair-vs-replace decisions favour replacing the microwave at this point on units past 6-7 years old.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does F2 only happen when I open the door?
Heat and steam expand the membrane just enough to short two traces near the door switch area.
The panel cools, traces separate, error clears.
This pattern points firmly to a failing touch panel rather than a control board issue.
Is it safe to keep using the microwave with F2?
The microwave will not run while F2 is showing — the control refuses any cycle.
So there is no overheating risk.
The annoyance is that you cannot use the microwave at all, which is exactly the symptom that pushes most owners to fix it.
