F5

Samsung Microwave

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F5 is a door switch fault — the microwave can't tell if the door is open or closed reliably.
This is a safety-critical issue: the microwave won't operate without a confirmed door state.
Open and close the door firmly several times — most F5 events clear with a clean close.
If F5 persists, the switch needs replacement, which is service-tech work because of internal high voltage.

Affected Models

  • Samsung over-the-range microwave
  • Samsung countertop microwave
  • Samsung built-in microwave
  • Samsung MS series

Common Causes

  • Door not closing fully — alignment off
  • Door switch arm bent away from contact
  • Switch contacts welded together or stuck
  • Wiring loose at the switch
  • Door latch worn out

How to Fix It

  1. Open and close the door firmly.

Open the door fully, then close it firmly until you hear it click into place.
Try this 5–10 times in a row.
Often the switch arm just needs to be activated cleanly to clear F5.
Listen for the click each time.

  2. Check door alignment.

Look at the gap between the door and the microwave body when closed.
It should be even all around.
If the gap is wider on one side (top or bottom), the door is sagging.
Sagging doors don't close properly and trigger F5 — door hinges may need adjustment or replacement.

  3. Inspect the door latches.

When you close the door, two small plastic prongs on the door slot into matching holes in the microwave body.
Look at these — any obvious damage?
Worn or broken latch prongs are common after years of use.
Replacement door latches are 20–40 USD parts.

  4. Don't try to repair the switch yourself.

Door switches sit inside the microwave near the magnetron and high-voltage capacitors.
Disassembling exposes you to dangerous voltage.
    This is service-tech-only work.
Don't try to access the switch even with the unit unplugged.

  5. Schedule service if needed.

    Provide model and serial numbers.
Most Samsung-authorized centers replace door switches in one visit.
Cost is typically 80–150 USD all-in.
Worth the safety; F5 makes the microwave unusable until repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the door switch safety-critical?

If the magnetron operates with the door open, microwave radiation escapes the cavity.
The door switch is what tells the microwave the door is closed.
Without confirmed closure, the microwave refuses to start the magnetron — that's why F5 stops all operation.
The protection is doing exactly what it should.

Can a sagging door be fixed?

Sometimes — if the hinges are loose, tightening them realigns the door.
If the hinges themselves are worn, replacement (50–80 USD parts) restores alignment.
For built-in microwaves, this is often worth doing.
For countertop units that are old, replacement of the whole microwave is usually cheaper.
