F8
Sharp Microwave
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
F8 on a Sharp microwave means the touchpad has reported a stuck or shorted button. Unplug for 5 minutes to reset. Clean the keypad surface. If F8 returns, the touchpad assembly needs replacement.
Affected Models
- Sharp R-651ZS
- Sharp R-1214
- Sharp Carousel R-21LCFS
- Sharp SMC2242DS
- Sharp R-820JS
Common Causes
- A button physically stuck by debris, grease, or liquid
- Moisture inside the touchpad ribbon connector
- Worn touchpad membrane (common after 8+ years)
- Damaged ribbon cable to the control board
How to Fix It
-
Unplug for 5 minutes.
A full power cycle clears soft faults. After 5 minutes, plug back in. If F8 returns immediately, continue with cleaning.
-
Press each button in sequence.
Press every button on the touchpad and listen for the beep. A button that does not beep, or beeps continuously, is the stuck one. Some Sharp models will display a hint pointing to the affected button.
-
Clean the keypad surface.
Wipe the keypad gently with a barely damp cloth. Do not spray cleaner directly — moisture is a leading cause of F8. For greasy keypads, use a tiny amount of mild dish soap on the cloth, then wipe with a clean damp cloth.
-
Allow to dry for 24 hours if needed.
If F8 follows steam-heavy cooking or kitchen humidity, leave the microwave unplugged with the door open for 24 hours. This lets trapped moisture evaporate from the keypad.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is F8 the same as F1 on a Sharp microwave?
No — F1 is the temperature sensor fault and F8 is the touchpad fault. Both prevent normal operation but the cause and fix differ. F1 needs sensor replacement; F8 usually needs touchpad cleaning or replacement.
How much does a Sharp touchpad replacement cost?
Sharp touchpad replacements typically cost USD 70–120 for the part. Including labour, expect USD 150–250. For Sharp microwaves over 8 years old, replacement microwaves are often the better economic choice.
