ABS Warning

Harley-Davidson Motorcycle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Harley-Davidson ABS warning light means the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) has detected a fault and is disabled. The brakes still work normally — ABS just will not activate in a hard stop. Read the fault codes to identify the specific cause.

Affected Models

  • Harley-Davidson Touring ABS
  • Harley-Davidson Softail ABS
  • Harley-Davidson CVO
  • Harley-Davidson Street Glide ABS
  • Harley-Davidson Road Glide ABS

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor fault (most common) — dirty or damaged sensor or tone ring
  • Low brake fluid triggering a pressure fault
  • ABS module fault
  • Damaged tone ring (exciter ring) on the wheel hub
  • Wiring harness damage to the wheel speed sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Read the ABS fault codes.

Harley ABS faults are stored separately from engine codes on many models. Use the built-in diagnostics or an HDLAN-compatible scan tool to read ABS-specific fault codes.

  2. Check wheel speed sensors and tone rings.

The front and rear wheel speed sensors are exposed and can accumulate road grime, mud, and metal debris. Clean the sensors and the tone rings (toothed rings on the wheel hubs) with a rag and inspect for damage.

  3. Check brake fluid level.

Low brake fluid can trigger ABS pressure warnings on some Harley models. Check both the front and rear brake fluid reservoirs. If fluid is low, top up to the maximum mark with DOT 4 fluid and inspect for brake system leaks.

  4. Inspect wheel speed sensor wiring.

Route the sensor wiring from each wheel up to the frame and check for chafing, cuts, or connectors that have worked loose. A broken wire or corroded connector is a common cause of intermittent ABS faults.

When to Call a Professional

ABS module replacement or advanced ABS diagnostics require a dealer-level scan tool (HDLAN). If wheel speed sensors and fluid levels check out but the ABS light persists, have a dealer diagnose the ABS module.
