Blink Code 7

Honda Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink code 7 on a Honda motorcycle means the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor circuit has an open or short. The ECU defaults to a fixed temperature value, so the bike runs but with cold-start issues and a non-functional temperature gauge. Sensor replacement clears the fault.

Affected Models

  • Honda CBR1000RR
  • Honda CBR600RR
  • Honda CB650R
  • Honda CB500X
  • Honda Africa Twin

Common Causes

  • Failed ECT sensor (NTC thermistor)
  • Loose sensor connector
  • Wiring damage between sensor and ECU
  • Corrosion at the sensor pins from coolant leakage
  • Bent or damaged sensor pins from rough handling

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the ECT sensor.

On most Honda bikes the ECT sensor threads into the cylinder head water passage near the thermostat housing or radiator. It is a small two-pin sensor.

  2. Inspect the connector.

Disconnect and look for green corrosion (a sign of past coolant leakage) or bent pins. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Test sensor resistance.

Disconnect and measure across the sensor pins at known temperatures. Honda spec varies by model but typically reads 2,500 ohms at 20°C dropping to 200 ohms at 80°C. Out-of-range readings confirm the sensor.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness.

Trace the harness from sensor to ECU. Look for chafed insulation. Damaged wiring causes the same blink as a failed sensor.

  5. Replace the sensor.

Honda ECT sensors cost USD 25–60. Replacement requires draining a small amount of coolant, unscrewing the old sensor, and fitting a new one with thread sealant. Top up coolant after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Honda overheat with blink code 7?

The cooling fan still operates from a separate thermal switch on most Honda bikes, so overheating risk is low. However the ECU cannot adjust fuel for engine temperature, so cold starts may be poor. Fix promptly.

Why did the temperature gauge stop working?

On most Honda models the gauge reads from the same ECT sensor. When the sensor fails, the gauge drops to its lowest reading. Replacing the sensor restores both ECU function and gauge reading.
