Blink Code 8

Honda Motorcycle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink code 8 on a Honda motorcycle means the throttle position sensor (TPS) circuit has an open, short, or out-of-range reading. The ECU cannot read throttle input correctly. The bike may run rough, hesitate, or refuse to start. Inspect connector and wiring before replacing.

Affected Models

  • Honda CBR1000RR
  • Honda CBR600RR
  • Honda CB650R
  • Honda CB500X
  • Honda Africa Twin

Common Causes

  • Failed throttle position sensor (potentiometer wear)
  • Loose or corroded TPS connector
  • Wiring damage between sensor and ECU
  • TPS out of adjustment after a previous service
  • Damaged sensor pins

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the throttle position sensor.

The TPS is mounted on the throttle body, attached to the throttle shaft. It is a small three-pin sensor — power, ground, and signal.

  2. Inspect the connector.

Disconnect, look for corrosion or pin damage, clean with contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  3. Test the signal voltage.

Backprobe the signal pin with a multimeter. Key on, engine off — the signal should read approximately 0.5V at closed throttle, rising smoothly to 4.5V at fully open throttle. Sudden jumps or dead spots indicate a worn potentiometer.

  4. Inspect the wiring.

Trace harness from TPS to ECU. Damaged wiring causes the same code as a failed sensor.

  5. Book Honda dealer for sensor and calibration.

Honda TPS replacement requires precise calibration to ECU. Dealer service typically costs USD 200–350 fitted. DIY without HDS leaves the sensor uncalibrated and the bike running poorly.

When to Call a Professional

TPS adjustment requires factory service tools on most Honda bikes — even after fitting a new sensor, the bike must be calibrated. Book a Honda dealer for TPS service unless you have a Honda HDS scanner or aftermarket equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ride my Honda with blink code 8?

Limited riding only. The bike may default to a safe-mode fuel map but throttle response is poor and the bike may lose power suddenly. Ride to a service centre rather than continuing normal use.

Why did blink 8 appear after a tune-up?

If the throttle bodies were synchronised or cleaned and the TPS was disturbed, calibration is now wrong. Return to the shop for re-calibration — usually a quick warranty fix.
