FI Warning Light

Kawasaki Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The FI (Fuel Injection) warning light means the ECU has detected a fault. The motorcycle will usually still run but may be in limp mode. Pull the fault codes from the dashboard or via the diagnostic connector.

Affected Models

  • Kawasaki Ninja
  • Kawasaki Z Series
  • Kawasaki Versys
  • Kawasaki ZX-6R
  • Kawasaki ZX-10R
  • Kawasaki Vulcan

Common Causes

  • Throttle position sensor fault
  • Intake air temperature sensor fault
  • Oxygen sensor failure
  • Crank position sensor issue
  • Sub-throttle valve actuator failure

How to Fix It

  1. Read the blink code from the dashboard.

On most Kawasaki models with FI warning, the dash will blink the fault code in long and short flashes after the ignition is turned on with FI lit. For example: 2 long + 2 short = code 22. Consult your service manual for the code meaning.

  2. Check sensor connections.

Sensor connectors can corrode or vibrate loose, especially on bikes ridden in wet weather. Unplug and reseat connectors on the throttle position sensor, intake air temp sensor, and crankshaft sensor.

  3. Reset by disconnecting the battery.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal for 5 minutes. This clears stored fault codes. If the FI light comes back on, the fault is current and needs further diagnosis.

  4. Take the bike to a Kawasaki dealer for KDS diagnosis.

If basic checks do not clear the FI light, a Kawasaki dealer can connect KDS to read all stored codes and live sensor data. This pinpoints the failed component much faster than guessing.

When to Call a Professional

Kawasaki dealers have the KDS (Kawasaki Diagnostic System) tool that reads detailed fault codes and live data. For complex faults, a dealer or qualified motorcycle technician is recommended.
