ABS Warning Light

KTM Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A KTM ABS warning light means the system has been disabled by a detected fault. Most cases are wheel speed sensor issues — dirty, damaged, or with the wrong air gap. Conventional brakes still work.

Affected Models

  • KTM Duke 390
  • KTM Duke 790
  • KTM Duke 890
  • KTM RC 390
  • KTM 1290 Super Duke
  • KTM 890 Adventure
  • KTM 1290 Super Adventure

Common Causes

  • Dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged sensor wire (especially at fork or swingarm flex points)
  • Air gap between sensor and tone ring out of spec
  • ABS turned off via menu (for off-road on Adventure models)
  • Failed ABS module (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Check if ABS was switched off.

On KTM Adventure and Enduro models, ABS can be turned off in the menu (for off-road riding). If the warning is the off icon (ABS OFF), simply re-enable ABS via the menu.

  2. Clean the wheel speed sensors.

Locate the front and rear ABS sensors near the brake discs. Clean dirt, brake dust, and metal particles from the sensor face and the toothed tone ring.

  3. Inspect the sensor wires.

Look for chafed or pinched wires, particularly where they flex with suspension movement. Replace damaged wires.

  4. Verify air gap.

If a wheel was recently off, the sensor air gap may be off. Loosen the sensor bolt, push the sensor lightly against the tone ring, then tighten — the sensor's built-in spacer sets the correct gap.

  5. Reset by riding or via dealer scan.

Some warnings clear automatically after a clean ride. If the warning persists, a KTM dealer can clear stored ABS codes after the underlying fault is fixed.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the sensors does not clear the warning, a KTM dealer can read the specific ABS fault code and identify the exact cause.
