ABS Warning Light

Triumph Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Triumph ABS warning light means the ABS system is disabled by a detected fault. Most cases are wheel speed sensor issues — dirty, damaged, or with the wrong air gap. Conventional brakes still work.

Affected Models

  • Triumph Tiger 900
  • Triumph Tiger 1200
  • Triumph Street Triple
  • Triumph Speed Triple
  • Triumph Bonneville
  • Triumph Trident
  • Triumph Rocket 3

Common Causes

  • Dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged sensor wire (especially at fork or swingarm flex points)
  • Air gap between sensor and tone ring out of spec
  • ABS turned off in the menu (Tiger off-road modes)
  • Failed ABS module (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Check menu settings (Tiger models).

Triumph Tiger adventure models can disable rear or both wheel ABS for off-road. If the warning is an ABS OFF icon rather than a fault light, re-enable ABS via the menu.

  2. Clean the wheel speed sensors.

Locate the front and rear ABS sensors near the brake discs. Clean accumulated dirt, mud, and brake dust from the sensor face and the toothed tone ring.

  3. Inspect sensor wires.

Look for chafed wires, especially where they cross the front fork. Damaged wires cause intermittent or persistent ABS faults.

  4. Verify air gap.

If a wheel was recently removed, the sensor air gap may be off. Loosen the sensor bolt, slide the sensor up against the tone ring, and tighten — the spacer sets the correct gap.

  5. Reset via diagnostic tool.

Some Triumph models clear ABS warnings automatically after a clean ride. If the warning persists, a Triumph dealer or Dealertool user can clear the stored fault.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the wheel sensors does not clear the warning, a Triumph dealer can read the ABS code with their diagnostic tool. Persistent ABS faults may indicate a failed sensor or ABS module.
