Blink Code 22

Yamaha Motorcycle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink code 22 on a Yamaha motorcycle means the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor circuit has an open or short. The ECU defaults to a fixed temperature value and the bike runs but with slightly reduced throttle response. Sensor replacement is straightforward.

Affected Models

  • Yamaha YZF-R1
  • Yamaha YZF-R6
  • Yamaha MT-07
  • Yamaha MT-09
  • Yamaha FZ-09

Common Causes

  • Failed intake air temperature sensor (NTC thermistor)
  • Loose or corroded sensor connector
  • Wiring damage between sensor and ECU
  • Sensor pin contaminated by dirt or moisture
  • Aftermarket airbox modification removing sensor mount

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the IAT sensor.

On most Yamaha bikes the IAT sensor is mounted in the airbox or intake duct. It is typically a small two-pin sensor with the tip exposed to airflow.

  2. Inspect the connector.

Disconnect and look for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  3. Test sensor resistance.

Disconnect and measure resistance between the two sensor pins. NTC thermistors typically read 2,000–3,000 ohms at 20°C and drop as temperature rises. Out of range or open circuit confirms sensor failure.

  4. Test wiring continuity.

Use a multimeter to test continuity from sensor connector to ECU pin. An open wire produces the same blink code as a failed sensor.

  5. Replace the sensor if testing confirms failure.

Yamaha IAT sensors cost USD 30–60. Replacement is typically a single screw or twist-in fitting, completed in 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Yamaha run badly with blink code 22?

The bike runs but with subtly reduced fuel adjustment for ambient temperature. In cold weather you may notice slightly cold-blooded behaviour, in hot weather slight loss of power. Many riders do not notice until they fix it and gain back response.

How can I prevent blink code 22 from coming back?

After fixing the sensor, apply dielectric grease to the connector to prevent moisture ingress. Most repeat blink 22 cases are connector corrosion, not sensor failure — sealing the connector solves the recurrence.
