Immobilizer

Yamaha Motorcycle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Yamaha immobilizer error means the ECU does not recognise the transponder chip in the ignition key. The engine will not start even if it cranks. Try removing metal items from the key ring and retrying — then read FI blink codes for a specific fault number.

Affected Models

  • Yamaha YZF-R Series
  • Yamaha MT Series
  • Yamaha FZ Series
  • Yamaha XSR Series
  • Yamaha Tenere
  • Yamaha TMAX Scooter

Common Causes

  • Damaged or demagnetised transponder chip in the key
  • Metal key ring items interfering with transponder signal
  • Immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition switch damaged
  • ECU fault not reading the transponder correctly
  • Using an uncoded spare key without the transponder chip

How to Fix It

  1. Try the spare key.

If you have a second Yamaha coded key, try it immediately. If the bike starts with the spare, the original key's transponder chip has been damaged, demagnetised, or worn out.

  2. Remove all metal items from the key ring.

Metal objects held close to the Yamaha key can disrupt the transponder signal. Use the ignition key alone and try starting the bike again.

  3. Check the immobilizer indicator light pattern.

Yamaha immobilizer indicator (usually a padlock or key icon) blinks in specific patterns to indicate fault type. Consult your owner's manual — the blink pattern identifies whether the fault is in the key, antenna, or ECU.

  4. Have a replacement key programmed.

Contact a Yamaha dealer with your vehicle registration document and the existing coded key (if available). The dealer will programme a new coded key using YDS. If both keys are lost, the ECU may need to be reset — a more involved dealer procedure.

When to Call a Professional

Programming a replacement Yamaha immobilizer key requires a Yamaha dealer with Yamaha Diagnostic System (YDS) software. You cannot program Yamaha transponder keys at home — proof of ownership is required.
