Memory Full

TomTom GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Minor

What it means

TomTom 'Memory full' (or 'There is not enough free space') means there's no room to download a map update, install a new map, or save more data.
Quarterly map updates can need several gigabytes of free space.
The fix is simply to clear room — remove a map region you don't drive in, delete old trips, or fit a bigger SD card on models that take one.

Affected Models

  • TomTom GO, GO Discover, GO Supreme, GO Essential
  • TomTom Start and Via series
  • TomTom Rider
  • Any TomTom carrying a large multi-country map

Common Causes

  • A large map — full Europe or North America — leaving little headroom for the next update
  • Several map regions installed when you only drive in one or two
  • Saved trips, recorded tracks, and custom POI files piling up over time
  • Extra voices, languages, and content packs taking up space
  • SD card too small for the map you want to keep

How to Fix It

  1. See what's using the space.

In MyDrive Connect, the device storage view lists maps, voices, and other content with their sizes.
That shows you exactly where the space went before you start deleting anything.

  2. Remove map regions you don't need.

If you have the whole of Europe but only drive in two countries, install just those.
Same for North America versus a single country.
This frees up by far the most space — a continent-wide map is huge.

  3. Delete old trips and tracks.

Recorded routes and planned itineraries accumulate quietly.
Clear the ones you don't need, either on the device or through MyDrive Connect.

  4. Remove spare voices and content.

Keep one voice; delete the extra languages, POI packs, and car symbols you never use.
Individually small, collectively they add up.

  5. Fit a larger SD card on supported models.

If your device stores its map on a microSD and yours is on the small side, move up to a larger TomTom-recommended card so the map and its quarterly updates fit with room to spare.
