Orange / Yellow LED — No Internet or Error

Google Mesh WiFi Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest WiFi orange or pulsing orange light means the device cannot connect to the internet. For the router: check the modem and ISP connection. For a Nest WiFi point: it cannot reach the Nest WiFi router — move it closer.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest WiFi Router
  • Google Nest WiFi Point
  • Google Nest WiFi Pro
  • Google WiFi (2016)

Common Causes

  • Pulsing orange/yellow: actively trying to connect but cannot reach the internet (router) or the mesh (point)
  • Solid orange/yellow: critical error — factory reset may be required
  • ISP outage or modem not providing internet to the router
  • Point out of range of the router — mesh backhaul not established
  • Failed firmware update leaving the device in an error state

How to Fix It

  1. Identify whether it is the router or a Nest WiFi point.

The Nest WiFi router is the unit connected to the modem via ethernet. Nest WiFi points are the add-on units placed around the home that connect wirelessly. Orange on the router means no internet from the ISP/modem. Orange on a point means it cannot reach the router.

  2. Router orange: restart the modem.

Unplug the modem from power for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the modem's internet indicator to turn solid. Then restart the Nest WiFi router by unplugging it for 10 seconds. If the modem's internet light returns to normal but the Nest WiFi stays orange, the Nest WiFi itself needs a factory reset.

  3. Point orange: move it closer to the router.

A Nest WiFi point showing orange cannot reach the mesh network. Temporarily move the point to the same room as the Nest WiFi router. If the point's LED turns white (connected), the original placement was out of range. Find a position that is halfway between the router and the desired final location.

  4. Check for a failed firmware update.

If the orange light appeared after an automatic firmware update and the device will not recover, the update may have failed. In the Google Home app, try restarting the device: select the device → Settings → Restart. If the device does not respond in the app, a factory reset is required.

  5. Factory reset the orange-LED device.

Hold the factory reset button (on the bottom or back of the device) for 10 seconds until the LED turns yellow, then release. The device resets and the LED will begin pulsing white as it restarts. After the reset, re-add the device to the network in the Google Home app using + → Set up device.

When to Call a Professional

A solid (non-pulsing) orange light that persists after a factory reset indicates a hardware or firmware fault. Contact Google Nest support.
