Red LED / Orange LED — No Internet or Error
TP-Link Mesh WiFi Router
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
TP-Link Deco red or orange LED means the device cannot connect to the internet (main unit) or cannot connect to the mesh (satellite node). For the main unit: restart the modem first. For a satellite node: move it closer to the main unit or restart it.
Affected Models
- TP-Link Deco XE75
- TP-Link Deco X90
- TP-Link Deco X68
- TP-Link Deco X55
- TP-Link Deco M5
- TP-Link Deco E4
Common Causes
- Main unit red/orange: ISP connection is down or the modem is not providing internet
- Satellite node red/orange: cannot reach the main unit — too far away or interference
- Firmware update failed — device stuck in an error state
- Factory reset in progress — LED turns amber/red during reset
How to Fix It
-
Identify which Deco unit is showing red.
The Deco main unit is connected to the modem via ethernet cable. Satellite nodes are the wireless-only units placed around the home. Red on the main unit means no internet connection — check the modem and ISP. Red on a satellite node means it cannot connect to the mesh — move it closer or restart it.
-
Main unit red: restart the modem.
Unplug the modem for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the modem's internet light to turn solid. Then restart the Deco main unit by unplugging it for 10 seconds. If the modem shows internet but the Deco stays red, check the internet connection type setting in the Deco app (DHCP vs PPPoE).
-
Satellite node red: move it closer.
A satellite Deco node showing a red LED cannot reach the mesh network. Move the node to the same room as the main unit temporarily. If the LED turns solid white or blue, the original placement was out of range. Reposition to a location roughly halfway between the main unit and the desired final placement.
-
Restart the device showing the red LED.
Unplug the Deco unit with the red light from power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. The LED will cycle through colors during startup — a solid white or blue LED indicates successful connection. Wait up to 2 minutes for the device to fully connect before taking further action.
-
Factory reset the red-LED device.
If restarting and repositioning do not resolve the red LED, use a pin to hold the reset button (inside the small pinhole) for 10 seconds until the LED turns amber, then release. After the reset, re-add the device to the network in the Deco app using + → Add Deco. If a freshly reset device still shows red after reconnecting, the hardware has failed — contact TP-Link support.
When to Call a Professional
If the Deco main unit LED is red after a confirmed working modem connection and a factory reset, contact TP-Link support. There may be an account or server provisioning issue.
