FaceTime Not Working

Apple macOS

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

FaceTime not working on Mac usually means one of three things: FaceTime cannot activate your account, you cannot connect to the other person, or your camera or microphone is blocked. Most FaceTime problems are caused by a wrong date/time setting, a network issue, or a privacy permission that has not been granted.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
  • iMac
  • Mac Mini
  • Mac Studio

Common Causes

  • Your Mac's date and time settings are wrong, preventing FaceTime from activating
  • FaceTime has not been granted Camera or Microphone access in Privacy settings
  • A firewall or VPN is blocking the ports FaceTime uses to connect
  • You are signed into the wrong Apple ID or your Apple ID session has expired
  • The person you are calling is using a device or macOS version with known FaceTime compatibility issues

How to Fix It

  1. Check date and time. Go to System Settings > General > Date and Time. Make sure 'Set automatically' is enabled. An incorrect clock prevents FaceTime from activating your account.

FaceTime activation uses Apple's servers and requires accurate time to validate security certificates.

  2. Grant camera and microphone permissions. Go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Camera. Make sure FaceTime is listed and its toggle is turned on. Do the same under Microphone.

macOS requires you to explicitly allow each app to use the camera and microphone. This permission can get turned off after a macOS update.

  3. Sign out of FaceTime and back in. Open FaceTime, go to FaceTime menu > Settings. Click Sign Out. Then sign back in with your Apple ID.

An expired FaceTime session can cause activation errors and prevent calls from connecting.

  4. Check your network. FaceTime requires an open internet connection. If you are on a work or school network, it may block FaceTime. Try using your iPhone as a Personal Hotspot to test.

FaceTime uses specific ports that some firewalls block. If it works on your phone's hotspot but not your Wi-Fi, your router or ISP is blocking FaceTime traffic.

  5. Disable VPN. If you use a VPN, turn it off and try FaceTime again. VPNs often interfere with real-time communication apps like FaceTime and Zoom.

If FaceTime works with the VPN off, your VPN provider may have a split-tunneling option that excludes FaceTime from VPN routing.

When to Call a Professional

FaceTime issues are almost always fixable at home. If your Mac's built-in camera is not working at all in any app, the camera hardware may be damaged. Visit an Apple Store for a hardware diagnosis if the camera never works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FaceTime say 'Waiting for Activation'?

This means FaceTime is trying to register your Apple ID with Apple's servers but cannot complete the process. The most common causes are a wrong date/time, a poor network connection, or a temporary Apple server issue. Check Apple's System Status page to see if FaceTime is having an outage.

FaceTime connects but the other person cannot hear me. What is wrong?

This is almost always a microphone permission issue. Go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Microphone and make sure FaceTime is allowed. Also check System Settings > Sound to make sure the correct microphone is selected as your input device.

Can I use FaceTime with Android or Windows users?

Yes — since macOS Monterey, you can send a FaceTime link to anyone. Android and Windows users can join a FaceTime call using Chrome or Edge browser — they do not need an Apple device. They receive a link and join as guests.
