Oil Pressure
Honda Marine Outboard Motor
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Honda's oil pressure warning indicator (red, oil-can icon) lights when oil pressure drops below safe minimum.
The engine isn't getting enough lubrication.
Stop the engine if conditions allow — every second at low pressure damages bearings.
Check oil level on the dipstick.
If oil is low, top up with Honda 4-stroke oil.
If oil is fine but the warning continues, don't keep running.
Affected Models
- Honda BF40-BF250
- Honda BF60-BF115
- Honda BF150-BF250
- Honda iST-equipped models
Common Causes
- Engine oil level low
- Oil pump failed or pickup screen clogged
- Wrong oil viscosity for water temperature
- Oil pressure sensor failed (false alarm)
- Internal bearing wear creating low pressure
How to Fix It
-
Stop the engine if possible.
Safest is stopping the engine entirely.
If you can drift, anchor, or tow, do it now.
Continuing to run scores bearings within seconds.
Brief idling to a safe spot is OK; minutes is not. -
Check oil level on the dipstick.
Pull the dipstick.
Wipe clean.
Reinsert and pull again.
Level should be between MIN and MAX marks.
If dry or below MIN, low oil is your warning cause.
Top up with the correct Honda 4-stroke oil to MAX. -
Inspect for visible oil leaks.
Walk around the engine and look in the bilge for oil drips or wet spots.
If oil has been leaking, you'll see traces.
Note the leak location for the mechanic — drain plug, gasket, or hose are common spots. -
Don't keep running if oil is fine but warning persists.
If oil is at MAX and the warning continues, the issue is internal — pump, sensor, or worse.
Stop the engine and arrange a tow.
Running with the warning but adequate oil means real damage is happening.
The protection isn't a suggestion. -
Get the engine to a Honda Marine dealer.
After any low oil pressure event, have the engine inspected.
The dealer checks oil pump, picks up screen, and looks for metal in the oil.
Metal flakes mean bearing damage — that's a powerhead rebuild (3000+ USD).
Caught early, it may just be a sensor or pump (under 500 USD).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this happen on first trip of the season?
Engines that sat over winter sometimes lose oil through gravity drain past internals.
If you didn't check oil before launch, you may discover the warning before discovering low oil.
Always check oil before each trip — Honda's owner manual specifies pre-launch oil check.
Is the warning lamp the same as the dipstick warning?
No — the dipstick is for visual checking when engine is off.
The oil pressure warning lamp is from a sensor that monitors actual pressure when the engine is running.
Both are useful but for different conditions.
The lamp tells you something is wrong now; the dipstick prevents it from happening.
