Overheat Water Flow

Mercury Marine Outboard Motor

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Mercury overheat fault is the system protecting against catastrophic engine damage.
Most common: failed water pump impeller (200-300 hour service item), debris blocking water intake screens, thermostat stuck closed.
Idle immediately, check the telltale stream — strong steady stream means water IS flowing, weak/none means impeller dead.
Don't push to home at speed; idle or get towed to save the engine.

Affected Models

  • Mercury Verado
  • Mercury 150 FourStroke
  • Mercury 200 FourStroke
  • Mercury 225 FourStroke
  • Mercury 350 Verado

Common Causes

  • Water pump impeller worn or destroyed
  • Water intake blocked by weeds, plastic, or other debris
  • Thermostat stuck in closed position
  • Cooling passages scaled (mineral buildup over years)
  • Failed temperature sensor (false alarm — rare)
  • Powerhead head gasket leak (catastrophic, expensive)

How to Fix It

  1. Idle immediately, don't shut down.

    Drop to idle.
Don't shut off — you need to assess water flow at idle first.
Lift the cowling for cooling assist.
    Watch the telltale stream.

  2. Check the telltale.

Mercury's telltale (the pee stream) tells you everything about cooling.
Strong steady stream at idle = water IS flowing; problem may be sensor or scaled passages.
Weak or absent stream = impeller dead or pump damaged.
This is the most important diagnostic step.

  3. If no telltale: shut down.

No water flow means immediate engine damage.
    Shut down within 30 seconds.
Plan: anchor or tie up, call for tow.
Running with no water flow destroys the engine in 2-5 minutes.

  4. Check intake screens at idle.

If you can lift the motor briefly to check (with someone watching gauges): inspect water intake screens on the gearcase sides.
Plastic bag, weeds, sand can block intake.
    Remove debris.
    Restart and watch telltale.

  5. Don't restart at speed.

If you got telltale back at idle, run only at idle to harbor.
Don't push throttle — high RPM with marginal cooling causes catastrophic damage in seconds.
5 mph speed with a failing cooling system is acceptable; 30 mph isn't.

  6. Schedule water pump service.

Mercury water pump impellers are 200-300 hour service items.
Kit is 30-60 USD; service takes 2-4 hours of work.
Often combined with lower unit oil change at the same interval.
Don't put off — impeller failure is the #1 cause of overheat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I run with the warning before damage?

Depends on actual water flow.
If telltale stream is steady, you might run safely at idle for hours — but get diagnostic.
If telltale is gone, shutting down within 30-60 seconds gives you a chance to avoid major damage.
2+ minutes with no water = head gaskets compromised.
