F3
GE Oven
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
GE oven F3 error means the oven temperature sensor (RTD probe) has an open circuit (F3) or a shorted circuit (F3 on some models means either). Test the sensor with a multimeter and replace it if it reads open circuit or near zero ohms.
Affected Models
- GE Electric Range
- GE Gas Range
- GE Profile Range
- GE Café Range
- GE JB Series
Common Causes
- Failed oven temperature sensor with open circuit
- Shorted sensor sending a zero-ohm reading
- Sensor wiring burned or disconnected
- Physical damage to the probe from contact with bakeware
- Control board issue (less common — test sensor first)
How to Fix It
-
Perform a power reset.
Switch off the breaker for 2 minutes, restore power, and check if F3 returns. A one-time F3 from a voltage transient may clear permanently.
-
Locate the temperature sensor.
Open the oven door and look at the upper rear wall inside the oven cavity. The sensor is a thin metal probe projecting from the back wall — typically held by two screws.
-
Test the sensor with a multimeter.
Disconnect the two sensor wires and test resistance. At room temperature (21°C / 70°F), a good GE oven sensor reads approximately 1,000–1,100 ohms. Open circuit (OL) means failed open; near zero ohms means failed shorted. Either confirms replacement is needed.
-
Replace the sensor.
Remove the two mounting screws, pull the probe out through the oven cavity, and disconnect the wiring from behind the back panel. Install the new sensor, reconnect the wiring, and run a test cycle.
When to Call a Professional
GE oven temperature sensors are inexpensive ($15–$40) and straightforward to replace. The probe mounts to the oven rear wall with two screws and the wiring connector is accessible from behind the back panel.
