F7

GE Oven

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

GE oven F7 error means a key on the touchpad membrane is stuck closed and sending a continuous signal to the control board. A power reset sometimes clears it — if F7 returns, the touchpad membrane needs replacing.

Affected Models

  • GE Electric Range
  • GE Gas Range
  • GE Profile Range
  • GE Café Range
  • GE JB Series

Common Causes

  • Worn or degraded touchpad membrane with a failed key contact
  • Moisture under the touchpad causing a false key press
  • Food or grease entering the touchpad surface
  • Physical damage to the control panel from impact or heat
  • Aged control panel where membrane contacts have fused

How to Fix It

  1. Perform a power reset.

Turn off the oven at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. F7 from a temporary moisture event or brief contact fault may clear after a full power cycle.

  2. Clean the touchpad thoroughly.

Wipe the control panel with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry completely. Grease or moisture under the edge of the touchpad can keep a key contact closed. Cleaning the surface eliminates this possibility.

  3. Check which key is shorted.

After restoring power, observe whether any key on the panel is lit or appears active without being pressed. The specific stuck key is usually what triggered F7.

  4. Replace the touchpad membrane.

Order the touchpad membrane or overlay for your GE model number. The membrane typically peels off the front panel or unclips, and the ribbon cable disconnects from the control board. Install the new membrane and the F7 error should not return.

When to Call a Professional

GE touchpad membranes are typically separate from the control board and cost $30–$80. Replacement is straightforward — the panel clips on and connects via ribbon cable. A repair technician can also replace it quickly.
