Self-Clean

LG Oven

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

LG oven self-clean will not start if there is an active error code, if the door lock fails to engage, or if the oven has not cooled enough after recent use. Clear any error codes, ensure the door closes fully, and wait for the oven to cool before starting.

Affected Models

  • LG Electric Range
  • LG Gas Range
  • LG LRE Series
  • LG LRG Series
  • LG Studio Range

Common Causes

  • Active error code (F3, F7, F9) blocking the self-clean sequence
  • Door lock motor failing to engage
  • Oven cavity still too warm from recent cooking
  • Faulty temperature sensor causing early shutdown
  • Control board fault preventing the self-clean programme from running

How to Fix It

  1. Clear any active error codes.

LG ovens will not enter self-clean mode if an error code is active. Perform a power reset at the circuit breaker, resolve any error (F3, F9, etc.), then attempt self-clean again.

  2. Allow the oven to cool completely.

If you cooked recently, the oven cavity may still be above the starting threshold for self-clean. Wait at least 30–60 minutes with the oven off before starting the self-clean programme.

  3. Remove all racks and accessories.

LG recommends removing oven racks before self-clean — the intense heat can discolour and warp standard chrome racks. Leave only racks specifically rated for self-clean cycles inside the oven.

  4. Verify the door closes and locks.

Close the oven door fully and start the self-clean cycle. You should hear the door lock motor engage within a minute. If the lock does not engage, listen for clicking — a clicking lock motor that fails to lock needs replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If the door lock motor is audible but the door will not lock, the lock assembly needs replacement. This is a straightforward part swap a technician can complete quickly.
