Self-Clean

Samsung Oven

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Samsung oven self-clean won't start if the door lock fails to engage, if there is an active error code, or if the oven temperature sensor is faulty. Clear any error codes and ensure the oven door closes fully before starting the self-clean cycle.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Electric Range
  • Samsung Slide-In Range
  • Samsung NE Series
  • Samsung NX Series

Common Causes

  • Active error code (SE, tE, FE) blocking self-clean from starting
  • Door lock mechanism failed or not engaging
  • Oven already too hot to start self-clean safely
  • Faulty temperature sensor causing premature shutdown
  • Control board fault preventing the self-clean sequence

How to Fix It

  1. Check for and clear any active error codes.

Samsung ovens will not start self-clean if any error code (SE, tE, FE, etc.) is active. Perform a power reset at the circuit breaker, clear the code, and then try starting self-clean.

  2. Ensure the oven door closes fully.

The self-clean cycle will not start unless the door lock engages. Check that the door closes flush with no gaps. Inspect the door hinges and gasket — a damaged gasket or bent hinge can prevent full closure.

  3. Allow the oven to cool completely.

Self-clean cannot start if the oven is already above a safe starting temperature. If you recently cooked, wait at least 30–60 minutes for the oven to cool fully before starting the self-clean cycle.

  4. Remove all oven racks before self-clean.

Samsung does not recommend leaving standard racks in during self-clean — the high heat can warp and discolour them. Remove all racks and accessories before starting the cycle.

When to Call a Professional

If the door lock motor is clicking but the door is not locking, the door lock assembly has failed. This involves disassembling the back of the control panel — a technician can replace it quickly.
