F3E2

Whirlpool Oven

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F3E2 means the oven temperature sensor (RTD probe) is faulty or disconnected. The oven cannot regulate temperature safely. Test the sensor resistance and replace it if it reads outside spec.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool Electric Range
  • Whirlpool Gas Range
  • Whirlpool WFE Series
  • Whirlpool WFG Series

Common Causes

  • Failed oven temperature sensor (RTD probe)
  • Loose or disconnected sensor wire in the oven cavity
  • Damaged sensor wire from heat exposure
  • Control board unable to read sensor signal

How to Fix It

  1. Reset the oven.

Turn off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. If F3E2 was a one-time glitch, this will clear it.

  2. Inspect the sensor wire connection.

The temperature sensor is a thin metal probe that extends into the upper-rear corner of the oven cavity. Pull it gently — if it comes out easily, the mounting screw is loose. Also check the wire connector at the back of the range.

  3. Test the temperature sensor with a multimeter.

Disconnect the sensor connector and test resistance. At room temperature, Whirlpool oven sensors typically read around 1,080 ohms. A reading far outside this range means the sensor has failed — replace it.

When to Call a Professional

Testing and replacing the oven temperature sensor is a straightforward DIY repair on Whirlpool ovens. A technician is only needed if the error returns after replacement.
