ErC

Camp Chef Pellet Grill

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

ErC on Camp Chef pellet grills is a generic 'component error' — the controller saw something out of spec on a connected component.
Often the RTD probe, the auger motor, or the hot rod is at fault.
Inspect the RTD wire for damage, listen for the auger and combustion fan during startup, and watch for the hot rod glowing.
The Camp Chef app sometimes provides more detail than the display.

Affected Models

  • Camp Chef Woodwind 24
  • Camp Chef Woodwind 36
  • Camp Chef SmokePro DLX
  • Camp Chef SmokePro SE
  • Camp Chef Apex

Common Causes

  • RTD temperature probe wire broken or shorted
  • Auger motor failure (won't turn or won't stop)
  • Hot rod open circuit (won't ignite)
  • Combustion fan stuck or motor failed
  • Wiring harness damaged where it enters the controller

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Camp Chef app for detail.

If your model is WiFi-connected, check the app for more specific error info than ErC alone.
Often the app names the actual component (probe, auger, hot rod).

  2. Power off and inspect wiring.

    Unplug the grill.
Open the controller compartment and look at every wire connector.
Push back any that look loose.
Check for rodent damage (chewed insulation) — a common outdoor-grill issue.

  3. Test the RTD probe.

The RTD is a thin metal probe attached to a long wire entering the cookbox.
Check that it's not bent flat against the firewall (heats wrong) or broken at the tip.
The wire should look intact through its full run.
    Replacement RTDs are 20-40 USD.

  4. Listen for the auger and fan.

Power on for a startup attempt.
Listen for the auger (slow grinding sound, every few seconds) and the combustion fan (steady whine).
If either is silent, that component is the fault.

  5. Check the hot rod.

About 3-4 minutes into startup, look at the firepot.
The hot rod should glow red.
No glow = open hot rod = needs replacement (20-40 USD).

  6. Contact Camp Chef support if all checks pass.

Camp Chef's customer service is good — they often ship replacement parts under warranty even for older grills.
Have your serial number ready (under the hopper).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ErC so vague?

Older Camp Chef boards use a single error code for any component fault to keep the firmware simple.
Newer connected models give more detail through the app.
If you see ErC on a non-WiFi model, you'll have to test components manually.
