Er2

Pit Boss Pellet Grill

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Er2 indicates the secondary RTD probe — typically the meat probe or ambient probe — has failed.
Either the probe is disconnected, the wire is damaged, or the probe itself has failed.
If you're using the meat probe, unplug and reconnect to test.
If Er2 persists, the probe is dead.
Replacement Pit Boss meat probes: 15–30 USD.

Affected Models

  • Pit Boss Pro Series
  • Pit Boss Lockhart
  • Pit Boss Navigator
  • Pit Boss Sportsman
  • Pit Boss Austin XL

Common Causes

  • Meat probe disconnected from the controller jack
  • Probe wire damaged (frayed, cut)
  • Probe itself failed
  • Connector contacts dirty or corroded
  • Controller's secondary probe input damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug and inspect the meat probe.

If using the meat probe, unplug the cable from the front of the grill controller.
Look at the connector pins — should be clean and undamaged.
Look at the cable — should be intact.
Check the probe tip for damage.

  2. Test by removing the probe.

If you're not using the meat probe, sometimes Er2 appears falsely.
Make sure the meat probe is fully disconnected — not partially inserted.
Some controllers display Er2 if a probe is partially seated.
Either fully connect or fully disconnect.

  3. Reseat the connector firmly.

If using the meat probe, push the connector firmly into the controller jack.
    Listen for the click.
Test by powering on — Er2 should clear if connector was loose.

  4. Inspect the probe wire.

Trace the meat probe cable from connector to probe tip.
Look for cuts, kinks, or chafe damage.
Meat probes get banged around during use and the cable can break inside the insulation.
    Visible damage means probe replacement.

  5. Replace if needed.

Pit Boss replacement meat probes: 15–30 USD parts.
Match the connector type for your grill model.
Some Pit Boss grills use proprietary probes; aftermarket compatible probes work but may not communicate as cleanly with the controller.
    OEM is the safer choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Er2 prevent the grill from cooking?

Usually no — Er2 affects the secondary probe (meat probe).
The grill itself still cooks based on the primary RTD probe.
You just lose meat probe functionality — can't read internal meat temp on the controller.
Use a separate wireless thermometer until repaired.

Can a meat probe fail from cleaning?

Yes — washing the probe in water (especially submerging the connector) can short the wires.
Meat probes should be wiped, not soaked.
If you've recently washed the probe and Er2 appeared, that's likely the cause.
Replace the probe.
