WiFire Connection Error

Traeger Pellet Grill

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

WiFire connection errors mean the Traeger lost its link to your home WiFi or to Traeger's cloud.
Most often the WiFi signal at the grill is too weak, the WiFi network changed password, or the cloud service had a brief outage.
Re-pair through the Traeger app, move the grill closer to the router, or use a WiFi extender if it's far from the house.
The grill itself still cooks fine even when WiFire is offline — only app monitoring is affected.

Affected Models

  • Traeger Pro 575
  • Traeger Pro 780
  • Traeger Ironwood
  • Traeger Timberline
  • Traeger Tailgater (WiFire)

Common Causes

  • WiFi signal too weak at the grill location
  • Home network password changed since pairing
  • Router rebooted and the grill didn't reconnect
  • Traeger cloud service temporary outage
  • Grill firmware needs update
  • 5GHz-only network — Traeger needs 2.4GHz

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm 2.4GHz is available.

Traeger WiFire only connects to 2.4GHz networks.
Check your router settings — if you have separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5GHz, the grill needs the 2.4 one.
If your router uses one combined SSID with band steering, the grill should connect, but signal in the backyard varies.

  2. Test signal at the grill location.

Stand next to your grill with a phone.
    Connect to the same WiFi.
Run a speed test or check signal bars.
Below 2 bars typically means the grill won't hold a connection.

  3. Re-pair via the Traeger app.

App → My Grill → Settings → Reset WiFi.
    Confirm.
The grill enters pairing mode (usually shown on the controller display).
Follow app prompts to enter your WiFi password and reconnect.

  4. Use a WiFi extender if needed.

If the grill sits beyond reliable WiFi range, a mesh extender placed near the back door fixes most outdoor signal issues.
Brands like TP-Link Deco or Eero work well for backyard coverage.

  5. Update grill firmware.

After re-pairing, the app prompts for any pending firmware update.
    Apply it.
Older firmware sometimes loses connection more readily than current versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the grill keep cooking if WiFire drops mid-cook?

Yes — the controller and probes work entirely on the grill itself.
WiFire only sends status to the app and lets you adjust temperature remotely.
Lose WiFi mid-brisket and the grill keeps holding 225°F until you stop it.
