Replace Cell Warning

Hayward Salt Chlorinator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Hayward AquaRite Replace Cell warning lights up when the cell's hour counter reaches 500 hours — it is a service reminder, not necessarily a fault. If the cell is still generating chlorine normally, clean the cell and reset the hour counter. If the cell has genuinely failed (0% output after cleaning), it needs to be replaced.

Affected Models

  • Hayward AquaRite
  • Hayward AquaRite Pro
  • Hayward Turbo Cell T-CELL-3 / T-CELL-5 / T-CELL-9

Common Causes

  • Cell hour counter reached 500 hours — scheduled service reminder
  • Cell plates scaled with calcium — performance degraded
  • Cell at end of life — typically 3–5 years or 10,000 hours
  • Previous replacement not logged and counter not reset

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the Replace Cell light came on at the 500-hour service interval.

The AquaRite Replace Cell light blinks (does not stay on) when the hour counter reaches 500 hours. A solid Replace Cell light indicates an actual cell fault rather than a scheduled reminder.

  2. Inspect the cell plates for scale.

Turn off the system and remove the cell. Hold it up to light and look inside — white or grey crusty deposits on the titanium plates mean calcium scale. A scaled cell cannot generate chlorine efficiently.

  3. Clean the cell with diluted muriatic acid if scale is present.

Mix 1 part muriatic acid with 10 parts water. Soak the cell for 5–10 minutes, rinse with fresh water, and reinstall.

  4. Reset the cell hour counter after servicing.

Hold the AquaRite diagnostic button for 3 seconds until the display changes. This resets the 500-hour service reminder counter. Do not reset without servicing the cell.

  5. Replace the cell if it no longer generates chlorine after cleaning.

A cell at end of life will show 0% output or very low output despite correct salt and temperature. Hayward Turbo Cells are available through pool dealers — match the cell model to your pool volume (T-CELL-3, -5, or -9).

When to Call a Professional

If the cell is clean and the salt level is correct but output is still at 0%, the cell needs replacing. Contact a Hayward dealer for the correct cell model.
